FBI Shifts Agents as Fraud Cases Rise"
USA Today (02/12/09) ; Johnson, Kevin
Mortgage fraud investigations are piling up, prompting the FBI to move more agents off of national security matters to tackle financial crime. According to the Bureau, the number of mortgage fraud cases rose from 1,210 in fiscal year 2007 to approximately 1,800 in fiscal 2008 and is showing no signs of declining. FBI Deputy Director John Pistole says there are 530 pending corporate fraud investigations, including 38 cases that involve large-scale investigations on par with the 2001 meltdown of Enron.
